Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Medical Billing and Collections Specialist ensures accurate billing, timely submission of claims, and collection of outstanding balances from insurance providers and patients. This role requires critical thinking skills and knowledge of commercial insurance payment methods.
 
Duties & Responsibilities:
•    Prepare, review, and transmit electronic and paper claims using billing software.
•    Correct and process billings to patients and third-party insurers.
•    Analyze patient bills for accuracy and ensure claims are clean before submission.
•    Follow up on unpaid claims with insurance providers.
•    Research and appeal denied claims.
•    Review accounts and communicate with insurance companies regarding discrepancies.
•    Log payments and update internal records.
•    Balance daily batches and assist with audits and refunds.
•    Monitor unpaid claims and send reminders to customers.
•    Process patient statements and maintain demographic records.
•    Set up payment plans and manage collection accounts.
•    Verify eligibility and benefits for treatments and procedures.
•    Communicate with the billing and credentialing coordinator to resolve audit issues.
•    Respond to billing inquiries from patients and staff.
•    Identify billing trends and issues with reimbursements.
•    Maintain confidentiality of client financial information.
•    Collaborate effectively with the team and promote a professional environment.
•    Attend community engagement activities and perform other duties as assigned.
 
Experience and Skills Required:
•    Minimum of two years in medical billing, coding, or healthcare administration.
•    Proficiency with billing software and electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
•    Experience with insurance claims and patient billing.
•    Knowledge of coding systems (HCPCS, CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10).
•    Excellent organizational, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.
•    Strong problem-solving skills for resolving discrepancies.
•    Ability to work independently and build long-term relationships.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office.
 
Qualifications:
•    High School Diploma required; Associate degree preferred.
•    Certification in Medical Billing and Coding preferred (CPC, CCS, CMRS, CBCS).
